Interface Designer (d/f/m)

Your mission

We are looking for a designer to help us make the next generation of interfaces for Ableton's products; someone with a point of view and vision who understands that design is about how something works. And that things work better when they look and feel great.

We want to work with someone who believes that software interfaces can do more than imitate hardware. It is important that you know what it takes to ship a feature, not just create deliverables. Finally, we want to work with people who understand (or are willing to learn) how to design interfaces for instruments, effects and workflows that musicians use to make music in real time.

Your role

  • You will work with product owners, users and other stakeholders to understand how musicians use our products in order to translate that information into problems to solve.
  • You will ideate, sketch, mock up and prototype concepts together with your team.
  • As part of the product team you’ll work with other product designers to extend and refine Ableton’s UI design language.
  • You’ll work with developers to prototype and implement interfaces. Together you determine how our interface needs should influence technical decisions.

Your profile

  • A proven ability to deliver beautiful, usable interfaces based on a user-centered design process.
  • Experience working with teams of developers and other designers delivering UIs for desktop, mobile or web applications.
  • The skills to present and explain design decisions to non-designers.
  • The ability to facilitate, lead and benefit from design critiques.
  • The ability to draw on wider discussion from the design and music community to improve the interfaces of our products and our practice of design.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • The willingness and ability to relocate to Berlin.

What would make you stand out

  • The ability to prototype and build your designs.
  • An interest in music making (with instruments, Live or other software, or hardware).
  • Experience mentoring and developing other designers.

Why Ableton

Designing at Ableton is translating music making into elegant workflows and interfaces.

We spend time with users to understand their needs. We explore, mock up and prototype our designs, and work from within teams of developers to implement and iterate on solutions. We improve our abilities as designers through feedback and involvement in the design community.

We believe diverse groups of people make better teams. We’re committed to increasing diversity in our workplace and providing equal opportunity throughout our recruitment process.

Your application

Apply by sending us your resume, a PDF or link to your previous design work, along with a one-page cover letter. Tell us about two things in your cover letter:

  • Your experience with music and what perspectives you think it could add to our team.
  • A popular product that you don’t like, and why you think it’s popular.

Please don’t spend more than one hour or create anything beyond a cover letter for these questions. We don’t want to create lots of extra work for you, but find personal responses very useful in our application process.
