How designers work here

At AngelList Talent we ship fast, but we ship to learn. Designers research every project and scope tightly first around the riskiest assumptions. We build prototypes to test these assumptions. We ship production features as quickly as you can—we won’t know how users will really react until we do. Once we’ve learned what works, we invest time in making the product as strong as it can be.

Head of Design

Head of Design is a key leadership position at AngelList Talent. You will support our existing designers in envisioning and delivering industry-leading work. Brand Designer, Product Design, and Growth Design all report to this role, and we’re looking for someone excited about that breath of responsibility.

People are at the core of our business and also should be important to our leaders. In this role you will nurture and develop the existing design team, while also attracting new talent to grow their ranks. The Design Team is one of our highest-performing teams, but you will help them reach new heights.

You will also work directly with the CEO and product and engineering leaders to shape company strategy. You will be a key company executive and advocate at the highest levels for the best possible user outcomes.

Specifically you wIll:

  • Recruit new designers to the team
  • Build a highly effective team and develop individual designers
  • Improve and innovate on design processes and infrastructure
  • Improve design output across the team through servant leadership
  • Nurture a design culture within your team and across the company
  • Operate as a member of the company’s executive team
  • Collaborate on defining overall company vision and strategy
  • Collaborate on defining a product vision and strategy
  • Collaborate on defining a design vision and strategy
  • Negotiate design overlaps with other business units

What we look for

Our designers come from a range of backgrounds, but we all share a desire to put the humanity back into finding a job on the internet. Our current team includes people who were artists, architects, engineers, and journalists, drawn from around the globe.

  • 3+ years of design leadership experience
  • Experience as a leader or executive within a company or startup
  • The ability to handle uncertainty and ambiguity, while giving clarity to your team
  • A strong view on how to support and develop design talent
  • Experience helping designers progress their craft and careers
  • A track record of spotting and recruiting great designers, especially from outside the standard tech pipeline
  • The ability to support product design, brand design and growth design work — you’ll do all three here
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Great product taste, paired with strong aesthetic sensibility
  • Attention to detail and an eye for great user experiences
  • Idealism mixed with pragmatism, and an “owners” mentality
